Universal Screening

What Are Universal Screeners?

Universal screeners are short, research-based assessments that help teachers quickly understand how students are developing key skills. These assessments are given to all students at set times during the school year. They are not graded and are simply tools to help teachers see how each child is progressing—similar to how a check-up helps a doctor monitor a child’s growth. The information from these screeners allows teachers to adjust instruction and provide extra support or enrichment as needed.

Literacy Screening in Butler School District

As part of our commitment to helping every child become a confident, capable reader, the Butler School District conducts literacy screenings for all students in kindergarten through grade three. These screenings help us identify students who may benefit from additional reading support early in their educational journey.

State law requires schools to screen students twice a year using an approved literacy assessment. The information gathered helps teachers plan effective instruction and determine whether students may need extra practice or targeted intervention in specific reading skills.

Families can view their child’s results in the Documents section of the Genesis Parent Portal, labeled mCLASS Report.

Do you still have questions after reading through your child's report? Please see the FAQs below!

We value our partnership with families in supporting children’s literacy development. If you have questions about your child’s mCLASS results or the literacy screening process, please reach out to your child’s teacher, principal, or supervisor.
